about us

How we care for children and families

The OVC Mbarara Sustainable Program is a community-based organization that supports orphans, vulnerable children, and children with disabilities in families because every child deserves to be loved, safe, and have dignity.

Currently, our program is helping 20 orphans and vulnerable children while supporting 150 children with disabilities and special needs to acquire quality education, necessary health services, and livelihood capacity to live fulfilling lives.

Founded in 1994, the program started helping HIV/AIDS-affected and infected children and later expanded to children with special needs. Today, we work with families and children from rural Mbarara Archdiocese and beyond.

In 28 years, over 1000 children have been supported through OVC Mbarara.  Some have gone on to occupy important positions in society. Most, if not all, have found their place in the broader community, gainful employment, a trade, or have founded a family.

What we do

Discover how we make a difference for children and families

Often children with disabilities are given to orphanages by parents who feel ill-equipped to meet their children's adaptive support needs due to a lack of emotional support or financial limitations. However, we believe children should be in families and kinship care, not orphanages.

Kids have the best chance to thrive when they grow up in a family. That is why we are committed to empowering children with disabilities and strengthening families. We also collaborate with other community service providers to improve vulnerable child well-being and inclusion in society.
